Bernard Georges Louis MILLANT

(1929/2017)

Bernard Georges Louis MILLANT was born on 13th May 1929 in Paris, into a family of luthiers. He was the great grandson of Sebastien Auguste DEROUX and the son of Max Stanislas MILLANT.

Whilst a secondary school pupil, he started making instruments in his spare time and finished his first violin at the age of 13.
In 1946, he worked as an apprentice in the workshop of luthier Amédée DIEUDONNÉ (his workmate at the bench was Rene MOREL). To complete his training and on the advice of his father, he took up an internship at the MORIZOT brothers workshop (five of whom were working there at the time) without realizing the importance of this step for his future career as a bowmaker.
He then left for America, where he was hired by the RUDIE house in New York. He worked there in collaboration with Jacques FRANÇAIS and soon discovered the world of authentication and expertise under the tutelage of the knowledgeable Rembert WURLITZER. Back in France, he set up on his own on 15th October 1950 at 56 rue de Rome in Paris, where he remained established for the rest of his career as a craftsman.

He married Francoise Davot on 17th November 1950, and together they had a daughter named Catherine.

His professional life was split between violins and bows. He made wonderful instruments that earned him several distinctions, including two Honorary Diplomas in Liège (Belgium) in 1954, the Gold Medal in the bow section at the International Competition of Ascoli Piceno (Italy) in 1959, the Bronze Medal of Craftsmanship Merit in 1967, the Gold Medal in the bow section in Liège (Belgium) in 1959, and many others. He was also made ‘Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ in 1989, ‘Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite’ in 1993, and ‘Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ in 2000.

Aside from his work as a master craftsman, Bernard Millant dedicated a large amount of time to the study of old instruments and became one of the foremost experts in this field. He was appointed expert witness with the Court of Appeal in Paris in 1975.
With the growing demand for his work as repairer and restorer of instruments, Bernard Millant recruited talented violin and bow makers, notably Jean-Francois Raffin, who assisted him for over 15 years. Thanks to the knowledge he accumulated through his close collaboration with Bernard, Jean-Francois was himself appointed expert witness with the Court of Appeal in Paris. They also collaborated over a period of five years to produce the publication ‘L’Archet’, which is still considered today as the main reference book on the subject of bows.

Bernard Millant left us in 2017. He will remain to all a major figure in the world of lutherie, in particular the art of bow making, whose level he raised to heights never reached before.
